    Biography:

    Anyte was from Tegea, one of the most rural areas in Greece, and worked as an Arcadian poetess from the 3rd Century BCE.

    She was referred to as “the woman-Homer” by Antipater of Thessalonica (Sidebottom 2002, 499 & 1915, 100). She carried on the tradition of Telesilla and Praxilla as a female poet from the Greek Peloponnese, writing on a wide range of topics (Barnard 1978, 204).

    Anyte is the author of at least 19 extant poems, providing us with the greatest amount of surviving poetry from a woman next to Sappho (Barnard 1978, 208).

    Her works concerned epitaphs for girls who died young, the activities of children, and nature (Barnard 1978, 208). Though she was from the rural and land-locked Tegea, some of Anyte’s poetry refer
